Luckenbooth brooches are so called because they were sold from 'locked booths' in the Royal Mile, adjacent to St.Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh in the early 1700's, and were traditionally exchanged between lovers on betrothal. They were subsequently pinned to the baby's shawl to protect it from evil spirits. Probably the most romantic & lovely type of brooch in Scotlands history.

As well as adorning the apparal of the highlander, these jewels also represented most of his wordly wealth, which he carried with him rather than entrusting them to banks.
