The Sporran evolved to serve the same purpose as did the heavy apron of leather strips, reinforced with metal to protect the stomach and groin of the Roman Legionary, a common sight in Scotland two thousand years ago. It also doubled as a leather pouch to carry food, money and musket balls within separate internal compartments.
